George Thomson moved his family to Nanaimo in 1978 with the goal of launching a sweets and confectionary food distribution centre. However, the move coincided with the strike of a large cheese company and a shortage of Canadian cheese in the area. Overnight, he went into the cheese business. By providing excellent customer service and quality cheese products, he was able to pass on the business in 2003 to his sons Kevin and Len. Len retired last year, and Kevin continues to run the family business.Paradise Island is still family owned and operated, and uses 100% Canadian milk with no modified milk ingredients, artificial preservatives, fillers, gluten, or animal rennet. Because it's made with all-Canadian milk, there's also no antibiotics or growth hormones. They let their cheeses naturally age, with no accelerators to speed up the process. They have steadily been making environmentally progressive changes over the last 17 years, from switching to a low-emissions fleet of distribution vehicles to installing LED and CFL lighting in their warehouse.
