South Island Saskatoons
South Island Saskatoons is a 7 acre Saskatoon berry orchard located in Cobble Hill, and is probably the largest dedicated Saskatoon berry farm in BC with approximately 7200 berry shrubs. Monty and Sharon Vanhouwe (and Sharon's parents Carol and Dan Teichrob) moved to Vancouver Island from Saskatchewan."Vancouver Island reminded us of northern Saskatchewan's Canadian Shield area. It's all lakes and evergreens and that's what we liked, it is so beautiful. Winter in Saskatchewan is like "Island time"; everything and everyone has to slow down - but here, it is "Island time" all the time! It just so happens we were attracted to the property we bought here, the Saskatoon Farm, because it is such a gorgeous piece of property that, thanks to those before us, was very well planned and maintained! We just fell in love with it. People laugh at us being from Saskatoon and buying a Saskatoon berry farm here! It really was not planned!"
The Saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia) is a medium sized shrub, or small tree, which belongs to the Rose family. It is closely related to the apple, hawthorn and mountain ash. The Saskatoon is native to the Canadian Prairies, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, Alaska, British Columbia and the northwestern and north central United States. It has gone by several names including Serviceberries, Juneberries, Shadberries, Sugar Pear, Indian Pear, and more.
