Yeshi Dressing
What started as a conversation at home in Mill Bay is now a favourite at farmers markets and grocery stores around BC and Alberta. Yeshi is a nutritional yeast-based dressing that's fit for gluten free and vegetarian diets. Slightly sweet and creamy, it has the subtle flavours of garlic blended with tangy and nutty undertones, you’ll find there's a Yeshi flavour for every dish! How did it all start?
Barbara is a wonderful cook and she has such a great palate; she can pick out subtle flavours that I have no idea about. She found this incredibly tasty salad dressing that I kept putting on everything. Everytime we were heading out to a restaurant I would remind her, ‘Barbara, don’t forget the dressing’. We would bring our own dressing because we were tired of the same choices...ranch, Italian or the ever present balsamic oil and vinegar. I also have a food allergy so we are pretty conscious of what we put in our bodies.
This went on for a while and when our kids left home for school we realized how much free time we had on our hands. We looked at each other and said, "it's quiet around here, we need a hobby." I said, "we should sell that dressing!" I’m an entrepreneurial spirit, and I have had a few businesses, but I have always wanted to start something that we could do together. Barbara had said no to most of my ideas, but the more I talked about this one the more she liked the idea. Our friends who had tried it, loved it. At work people would always ask for us to bring them some. So we got kind of excited and we agreed, "Let's do it!". After that, we were off to the races, we were both so excited to have something to do besides sit in front of the TV.
We started testing different recipe versions and getting our friends to be our testers. Yeshi Chili. Yeshi Ginger and Sesame. Our friends loved them, our co-workers loved them, so we started taking Yeshi to our local Farmer's Markets. The response was overwhelming. I can’t tell you how many times people have told us they put the dressing on everything! So now we have ventured into retail!
Our friends and community have been so supportive and are so excited for us. We feel inspired and blessed every time someone comes up to us and tells us they love our dressings and what new dish they have tried it with. We hope people will have fun, and find their own ways to use Yeshi and most of all enjoy eating it as much as we have building our business.
Try it on everything!
